Welcome To Lewis Herman
I’m Lewis Herman, a philosopher and writer exploring how ethics can guide us in a rapidly changing world. My central project, The Physics of Morals, is a new system of ethics that critiques traditional frameworks—deontology, virtue theory, and consequentialism—while building toward a model better suited for the complexities of modern life.
For me, philosophy is not just an academic exercise—it is a way of living. It is the practice of questioning what we take for granted, of confronting the problem of evil, and of seeking clarity in how we ought to act. I write to make philosophy accessible, offering ideas that are rigorous yet practical, challenging yet useful for anyone searching for moral direction.
My work grows out of both personal reflection and dialogue with others. Over the years, I’ve sought to bring philosophy beyond the page, into everyday conversations and real-world problems. Whether through writing, teaching, or community engagement, my goal is to make ethics a living tool for reflection and action.
When I’m not writing or thinking, I enjoy sailing, strategy games like Go and chess, and the quiet clarity of long baths. These pursuits remind me that philosophy is not only about grappling with the abstract but also about finding meaning in the details of everyday life.
